OUR MISSION

The Wisconsin Trust Account Foundation Inc. (WisTAF) is dedicated to equal access to the civil justice system, funding legal services for low-income persons through the fair and effective administration of Interest On Lawyers' Trust Accounts (IOLTA), Public Interest Legal Services Fund (PILSF), and other sources.

Petition for E-Banking rules filed: Facilitating electronic banking in lawyer trust accounts and fiduciary accounts

Scam emails target IOLTA accounts

Legal professionals holding IOLTA accounts should beware of any email indicating that their IOLTA accounts have “insufficient funds.” The Wisconsin Office of Lawyer Regulation (OLR) has received notice of an email scam that is targeted at lawyers and their IOLTA accounts. It''s likely that such messages are part of a broader phishing attack targeted to legal professionals and should be deleted or marked as spam upon receipt. more


Wisconsin lawyers should take action now to avoid ethical violations pertaining to credit card transactions in 2013

Changes in federal law regarding the reporting of credit card transactions have the potential to negatively impact the credit card trust accounts of Wisconsin lawyers and to potentially lead to ethical violations by lawyers. Pursuant to the Housing Assistance Tax Act of 2008, credit card processing companies are required to verify and match each merchant’s federal tax identification number and his/her legal name with those found on file with the IRS. more


Continued low interest rates could spell disaster for IOLTA

The U.S. Federal Reserve said Wednesday it will not raise interest rates until at least late 2014. Contingent on these interest rates, IOLTA (Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts) funds legal service organizations which provide invaluable services to low-income Wisconsinites dealing with disability claims, unfair landlords, benefits denials, and much more. more


Supreme Court denies "Civil Gideon" petition

From the Wisconsin Access to Justice Commission blog dated January 19, 2012: Today, the Wisconsin Supreme Court voted unanimously to deny Petition 10-08. The petitioners were requesting a new court rule that would have required circuit court judges to appoint attorneys at public expense for low income litigants in certain types of civil court cases. more

Commission appoints work group for Wisconsin civil right to counsel project

The Wisconsin Access to Justice Commission has appointed a special working group to develop a formal proposal for a study that would evaluate the costs and benefits of providing counsel to low income individuals in some civil legal matters where basic human needs are at stake.  Initial members of the working group are Commission members Gregg Moore, Don Friske, John Ebbott, Deedee Rongstad and  Judge Margaret Vergeront as well as the Director of State Courts, John Voelker. more
