The mother of 15-year-old “Emmie” took her to another state and left her with a series of strangers. After this went on for some time, Emmie borrowed a phone to call the one person she trusted — her grandpa in Wisconsin. Grandpa immediately came to her rescue.

But once she was home, Emmie needed counseling for suicidal thoughts. Her grandpa couldn’t get medical care for her because he wasn't her parent or legal guardian.

That’s when Kids Matter Inc. stepped in. They employed civil legal aid tools to get Emmie to safety, secure her psychiatric care, and reunite her with the one adult who always showed up.

Emmie’s now healing — at home, with grandpa serving as her guardian.
